  Still so hot. Still electric.

  ‘Why?’ he asked.

  ‘I’m already late, aren’t I?’ She shrugged. ‘I think I was supposed to creep out under cover of night. Isn’t that the unwritten law of these things?’

  ‘You were busy.’

  She wanted to thank him then, truly thank him for making such a bad night into such a great one, but she was afraid it would sound strange. Pathetic, when it was the opposite of that. So she only pushed up on her toes and pressed a kiss to his lean jaw.

  ‘I’m sure you have a thousand things to do,’ she whispered. ‘You should do them.’

  She went to turn again and really, truly, walk out, but his hand shot out, holding her fast.

  His gaze was too intense when it met hers.

  ‘Or you could stay,’ he gritted out. His free hand crept up and rubbed at his chest like it hurt him.

  ‘For how long?’ she asked, but she could feel too much emotion then, rocketing through her the way it hadn’t last night. Making her feel weak and powerful at once. Making all of this seem preordained, somehow. Perfect, even now.

  ‘We can start with the weekend,’ he said, and his voice was gruff, but she could see that gleaming thing in his gaze and she knew what it was. It was in her, too. It was a fresh start. It was hope. ‘Then we can work through your rebound period. Do you have an idea of long that might be?’

  ‘Several months, I imagine,’ she said, very seriously.

  ‘So we’ll have our work cut out for us,’ he said, and when he tugged on her arm, she flowed into him, and they came together as if their bodies had known all along what she was only then beginning to suspect: they were made for each other.

  ‘Is this where you give me your lecture on monogamy?’ Jenny asked. ‘How you’re opposed to it? I seem to recall you mentioning it last night, but I still haven’t heard it. I want to adjust my expectations accordingly.’

  He laughed, and it was a dark thing, magic and sex at once, and it pooled inside of her, making her shiver with the beauty of it. The exquisite hunger.

  ‘My thoughts on monogamy are evolving,’ he told her. ‘Your expectations might well have to do the same.’

  ‘I wouldn’t rush into anything, Brax,’ she cautioned him, though she could feel the way her eyes were dancing as she wrapped her arms around his neck and held on. ‘You hardly know me. I steal men’s shirts. I could be an absolute lunatic.’

  Brax kissed her then, swift and sure. Possessive and perfect, and then he lifted her up against him and pulled her legs around his waist while he gazed up at her as if she was the marble statue and this was the shrine, after all. ‘I’m counting on it.’
